So in case you haven't heard, I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon to spend 3 months as a summer intern in Nairobi, Kenya. I was planning on spending a normal summer working in town, with no big exciting plans when I learned about the possibility of a fully funded summer internship. I applied on a whim, not expecting to actually be accepted. However, within a week I found out that I (along with three other UFV students) was headed to Africa for the summer. I've spent the last two weeks getting immunizations, packing, and trying to fit a whole summer's worth of fun with my friends into just a few days. Now my bags are packed, I've spent some awesome times with great friends, and I'm so excited to go!
We are taking a 9.5 hour flight to Amsterdam, where we will have 8 hours to explore the city, before we take an 8.5 hour flight to Nairobi. I've never crossed an ocean, I'm pretty excited that this trip will take me to two continents!!
Once I arrive in Nairobi, I'll be living in a residential hotel for the majority of the trip. I will be working probably 4 days a week with the World Scout Bureau in their Regional Office. I may also have the opportunity to work once a week in an orphanage. During our stay, we are planning on going on a Safari with a group of Trinity Western University students at the end of June. We hope to take trips out to Mombassa (on the coast), and Kisumu (on Lake Victoria) to see other fellow UFV student interns.
I'm so excited to have this amazing opportunity to see another part of the world. I'm sure the things I see and do will both humble and inspire me. I hope this summer will mark a huge growth for me, both personally and professionally. It was such an honor to be chosen for this trip, and I can't explain how grateful I feel for this chance of a lifetime. I will be posting here on a regular basis, so if you feel so inclined, you can keep up with my travels throughout the summer :)
